06-01-05  Responding to a request by the Bluff School of Claremont a representative of the New Hampshire Trappers Association spent a class period with the fourth graders discussing the native furbearer species in an interactive forum. 05-29-05  The Profile Bowmen Club of Gonic NH had an all day competitive shoot with approximately 300 participants and guests in attendance.     Another in the series of St Charles Children's Home fishing days was enjoyed in spite of a damp day which did not prevent a good time. Once again the NHTA worked with the Profile Bowmen club of Gonic New Hampshire for a great time enjoyed by all. This is the fourth year we have had one of these outings with and at the facilities of Profile Bowmen. Profile goes all out for this event each year providing many stocked fish in their club pond, good food, and an abundance of volunteers to guarantee success. It is a pleasure to work with the folks from Profile, they are an extremely valuable asset in our joint efforts to provide a fine program of outdoor fishing experiences for these wonderful children. Profile is a small club that does a lot, they are truly a class act.
It was nice to see Patti Costa, the recently appointed Fish and Game Commissioner from Belknap County, show up to pitch in. Patti attended many state and county sport club meetings prior to her appointment and was well received wherever she went. One of the issues for which she regularly expressed interest and concern was the ability to introduce the next generation to outdoor sporting activities. Patti feels that more should be done to provide an opportunity for the coming generations to experience what we all enjoy. Patti was particularly concerned that we allow and encourage the female component of our sporting community to develop and grow. Perhaps as a Commissioner Patti will be in a position to positively influence the NHF&G Departments efforts at promoting the various outdoor sports. On this day, Patti was working in synergy with our volunteers to achieve the same goal, one kid at a time. Legislation is moving forward in Illinois that would afford the Department of Natural Resources a management tool to help maintain healthy wildlife populations and provide trappers with another proven method to enjoy their activity.

House Bill 1486, introduced by Rep. Frank Mautino, D-Spring Valley, would allow the use of cable restraints, commonly known as snares, with a landowner’s written permission. The snare may not be powered by springs, spring poles, or mechanical devices and must be checked daily.  It cannot have a loop diameter exceeding 15 inches and must be equipped with a device that keeps the loop diameter more than 2˝ inches.

On April 20, the bill unanimously passed the Senate Agriculture and Conservation Committee.  House Bill 1486 now awaits action on the Senate floor.

“Animal rights groups want to eliminate trapping nationwide, but sportsmen who enjoy the sport are fighting to ensure its survival,” said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state services.  “This year alone, sportsmen are combating or have defeated anti-trapping bills in Rhode Island and Maryland and passed pro-trapping regulations in Connecticut.  Illinois sportsmen are urged to take action so that we can add them to the list of victories.”

Take Action!  Illinois sportsmen should ask their senators to support HB 1486.  Explain that this bill gives the DNR another successful management tool and offers trappers more opportunities.  To contact your senator, call (217) 782-4141 or use the Legislative Action Center at http://www.ussportsmen.org/.

Recently the the Directors of the New Hampshire Trappers Association voted unanimously to become a sponsor of the vary worthy national program Traps4kids. This is history in the making and those who attend will have some very special memories to treasure. Gather up the kids or grandkids, and head on up to Sherman Maine for the first of what I am sure will become an annual tradition. April 24th was the Spring Meeting of the New Hampshire Trappers Association at the Springfield NH Fire Station. A rainy day interfered with a few of the planed trapping technique demonstrations which would have been staged outside, but otherwise it was a fine day enjoyed by those in attendance. There were fur-buyers and equipment suppliers available. A demonstration of Trapline Tricks was put on by Robert McMaster of Rochester and a demonstration and talk about Bottom Edge Trapping for mink and otter was put on by Mike Kazak of Charleston. After lunch and a lot of mingling with old friends the meeting to discuss the business of the NHTA was carried out. We are very thankful and appreciate our friends at the Springfield Fire Station.

Connecticut Trapping Regulation Approved- (04/29)
Connecticut

A Connecticut legislative committee has approved a proposal to permit the use of padded traps for coyotes.

On April 26, the Regulation Review Committee passed a wildlife regulation packet that includes a provision to allow for the trapping of coyotes with padded foothold traps. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Wildlife Division wants to add the trapping technique in response to increasing conflicts between coyotes and landowners.

“Passage of the packet is a victory for sportsmen and scientific wildlife management,” said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Director of State Services. “Despite opposition from anti-trapping organizations, the Regulation Review Committee listened to the scientifically-based recommendations of the Wildlife Division.”

State and federal wildlife biologists consider trapping an essential wildlife management tool.

PETA Targets Jennifer Lopez Film Premiere
But Jennifer Keeps Her Fur

Saturday, April 30, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Dozens of protesters representing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals greeted Jennifer Lopez at the premiere of her new movie "Monster-in-Law with signs declaring her the "monster-in-fur" for her Sweetface fashion collection.

The protesters, who included some people dressed in animal suits, complained that they have asked several times that Lopez eliminate fur from her clothing line, but have been ignored.

"She could make a difference in a positive manner, and what she does is cause the death of a lot of animals," protester Linda Kraemer said during Friday's demonstration in front of the National Theater in Westwood.

Lopez was asked what she thought of the protesters.

"I don't," she replied as she headed into the premiere.

Others involved in the film said the demonstration didn't bother them.

"It's America. You have a right to protest and do whatever you want to do," said actress Wanda Sykes

New Lands Available for Trapping Through State Managed Lottery

The New Hampshire Rails Bureau has authorized NHF&G to add 20 new areas to the list of lands available for trapping through the managed lottery system. The list of lands managed for trapping by NHF&G and available to trappers through lottery has just been revised, 19 of the 20 corridors involved have been mixed into that list. It is presumed that all twenty of the new parcels will be listed on the NHF&G link http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/?Hunting/hunt_trap_new_lands.htm for this purpose as new lands come under a different procedure for distribution to trappers. Normally all such lands are in a lottery during even numbered years. For more information on the lottery rules, procedures, lands involved, and printable application forms visit the NHTA Trapping Regulations page. All of the new areas to be listed are considered nuisance beaver control areas (NBCA) and may require trapping outside the regular fur trapping season when requested by the Trails Bureau.
